Basic Guide To Foam Tapes from Affixit

What is Foam Tape?

Foam tapes are compressible, pressure-sensitive self-adhesive tapes that are formed with an open cell or closed cell structure. Coated in adhesive on one side (single sided) or both sides (double-sided). It is used to bond and/or seal textured, dissimilar and uneven surfaces. Our foam tape can be used as a gasketing tape as well. Creating an airtight, weatherproof seal as well as providing soundproofing qualities. It can also prevent water and gas from escaping joints. Foam tape comes in many shapes, sizes and varieties and is appropriate for multiple applications. Factors to take into consideration when selecting the correct tape include: The surface to which it is bonding (technically referred to as the substrate), Application and service temperature requirements, functionality required bonding, sealing (water, weather, gas, fire, air, dust) or cushioning or a mix of the three). Service life and environmental factors when in situ. The tapes are generally conformable and easy to shape. It does an excellent job of bonding uneven surfaces together and firmly holding them in place. Unlike wet adhesives, it is clean, quick and easy to apply, resulting in little waste. Making foam tape adaptable to numerous jobs and repairs from across many industries.

Uses of Foam Tape

Since foam tape is adaptable and flexible, it makes it an ideal solution for a wide variety of applications and uses. It is particularly popular in the industrial and construction sector. We offer a wide range of double and single-sided foam in all shapes and sizes, as you can see above. Ensuring you can find the most suitable foam tape for the job.

Here are some simple uses of Foam Tape:

  • Sealing (air, water, weather, dust, smoke, fire, gases)
  • Thermal Insulation
  • Weatherproofing
  • Cushioning
  • Gap Filling
  • Vibration Dampening
  • Soundproofing S
  • pacing

Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Varieties

Pressure sensitive adhesives require pressure to be applied once the tape has been applied correctly. This encourages the adhesive to ‘wet out’ and achieve maximum bond strength. Pressure sensitive adhesives are divided into three main categories; rubber, acrylic and silicone. There are many variants within these master categories each offering different attributes.

Rubber Adhesive

Most commonly used for internal applications, rubber adhesives generally have a higher instant bond strength but lower service temperature range. Poor resistance to weather, water and U.V. light.

Acrylic Adhesive

Suitable for both internal and external applications. High initial bond strength which proceeds to gain strength over a period of time (typically 3 days to reach maximum bond strength). Good resistance to weather, water and U.V. light. Extended service temperature range and most commonly used for permanent, long term applications.

Silicone Adhesive

Silicone adhesive is often used for short term applications as most offer clean peel removal after use. It has an unprecedented application and service temperature range. Offers excellent resistance to U.V. light and fungus and exceptional ageing properties once it is applied.
